A Viking Dig in Room 19
These P6 pupils enjoyed finding out about the
Vikings during an archaeology dig.
We found the remains of a Viking
warrior. He was buried with his sword
and shield. The sword was bent so no
one else could ever use it again. The
shied was made of wood with a metal
centre called a "boss." The metal
objects had rusted so they must have
been made from iron.
The planks of the longship are made from logs,
which have been split into two pieces. The
figureheads are dragons or snakes. They were
steered by a tiller attached to a large rudder.
The longship backbone was called a keel.
This monk has died when the Vikings
attacked their monastery
They were forced down the Round
Tower where the Vikings killed them.
During the dig we discovered a sail, which
had been rolled up and tied with rope.
The mast, seen in the centre of the
photograph has been broken. It was used to
hold up the Ship's sail.
