GOLDEN TAPESTRY
The Golden Tapestry is a Commonwealth wide project for schools and
has involved 1800 Primary and Special Schools across the whole
Commonwealth. We have been extremely pleased and excited to be
involved in such an event.
Our school has made a metre square of textural embroidery depicting our
50th Anniversary Fancy Dress Parade through places of interest in Antrim
town. It depicts the famous Viking Round Tower, the Castle grounds and
their varied vegetation, the blossom on the trees, the shores of Lough
Neagh, the reeds and the indigenous fish and eels.
130 children from the year groups Primary 1 to Primary 7 were involved in
creating our tapestry. We commenced work in April 2005 and completed it
in January 2006.
Many art techniques were used such as weaving, painting, drawing,
printing, ink washing, collaging and stitching. We have been very excited
by this project. We have enjoyed the various stages of our "tapestry
making" and have learned, experimented with and used many skills - most
of all, though - we had FUN!
The picture above shows our tapestry displayed in the foyer before being
sent away. a programme of exhibitions across the Commonwealth is
planned in 2006, culminating in a final exhibition of all canvasses from all
the participating schools at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in
March 2006.
Our school's tapestry will be one of the 1800 combined to make "The
Golden Tapestry" - what an honour!
A t-shirt showing the insignia for the 2006 Commonwealth
Games to be held in Melbourne, Australia in March 2006.
This is a picture of another tapestry completed in Antrim Primary School. This was a
Millennium tapestry, made by six classes comprising the P1 and P4 year groups. This
was part of a display at the Millennium Dome in 2000. 1500 Primary and Special schools
were involved.
Another super piece of work from the pupils of Antrim Primary School, I'm sure you will
agree!
