The RDS Primary Science Fair is part of the BT Young Scientist and Technology
Exhibition. Although it is not part of the main competition, it gives pupils the opportunity
to display their work at a major exhibition. They can share their ideas with pupils from
other schools and communicate their interest and knowledge of science and
technology to the judges and other adults at the fair.
The theme of our project was Sensor Technology and Intelligent Clothing which was
designed to provide 'fun activities' in a meaningful way
The pupils worked on a range of challenges which involved building electronic sensors
into different designs.
Pupils researched the concept of "Intelligent Clothing", which integrates a range of
sensors and devices that are interactive with the environment. The final project included
conceptual designs and integration of electronics into various items of clothing.

The final outcome, in terms of the project, was several pieces of intelligent clothing
which had built-in sensors:
" Humidity sensors - sweaty shoe
" Light sensors - Night light jacket
" Movement sensors - sleepy pupil cap
" Temperature sensors - cool T-shirt
Our school promotes STEM subjects and we have great support from the board of
governors and parents. We work with staff from AGS and their students act as STEM
mentors to our pupils sharing their enthusiasm and knowledge of STEM. We also work
with NEELB Science & Technology staff and other agencies such as SENTINUS which
supports the development of STEM subjects in schools.

Fair Trade Assembly - Monday 8th March 2010
The Eco group and several Primary 6 pupils addressed the Key Stage 2 assembly on
the topic of Fair Trade. Mr David Ford (Chairman, Antrim Borough Community Fair
Trade Committee) and Mr. Michael Laverty (Environment manager, Antrim Borough
Council) were in attendance. Mr. Ford encouraged the pupils to look for Fair Trade
products in the shops and encourage their families to buy them, when possible.
Children are also on the lookout for shops in Antrim that sell Fair Trade produce - a
list of the shops and their produce will be compiled in future weeks!
