News 2007 - 2008
Thanks to another great effort from Antrim Primary School pupils and their families and
friends, over £3000 was raised for the R.N.L.I. A cheque was handed over to
"Lifeboatman Sam" at the Primary 6 harvest assembly at the end of October. A huge
thank you to all those who contributed so generously to this most worthy cause.
Below are some pictures taken during the P6 assembly, featuring the harvest of the sea.
Formula One team
Six Antrim Primary seven pupils from room 7 took part in a "Formula 1
challenge" at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum in the middle of
December. The children had to design a formula 1 car, arrange for the
design to be cut from wood, sponsorship had to be raised, racing the car
against other schools, reaction times were tested and a full explanation of
the process given to examiners on the day.

Mrs.McKee encouraged the children throughout the effort and all the
labours were extremely well rewarded when Antrim Primary came first in
their section, qualifying for the national finals in Birmingham, to take place
during the second weekend in January 2008.

Mr Kelly retired at Christmas. We are very grateful for his cheerful service given
to the NEELB for 23 years (15 years at Oriel Road and 8 years at Rathenraw). Mr
Kelly joined us for a presentation on the last day of Autumn term.

A Special report by the Fomula 1 team!

We are the Antrim Griffins, the formula team from Antrim Primary School.
On Sunday 13th January 2008 we were crowned the British champions at
the F1 in Schools National finals in the 9-11 category.
This was the first year primary schools took part in the F1 in Schools
challenge and we were delighted to represent Northern Ireland at the NEC
in Birmingham.
We worked with Mrs McKee who told us about the challenge. We had to
design, construct and race a Formula 1 car made from a block of balsa
wood, and powered by a CO2 gas canister. The car was raced over a
miniature two lane track and the fastest time was recorded.
We also had to produce supporting evidence of our design. From our
marketing campaign we raised £2600 in sponsorship.
Abbie, the team manager, said she was thrilled to be at the National Finals.
Chloe, the resources manager was very excited to have won the
competition and would like to thank all our sponsors especially Adrian
Watson, the Mayor of Antrim and Antrim Borough Council who have been
very supportive throughout this project.
Ashley, the design engineer, was proud of the car design. Stephen, the
graphic designer, thought our portfolio was of a high standard.
Zoe, the manufacturing engineer, said she was so…… gob smacked.
Christopher said it was really exhilarating racing the car.

Kids on the Block
Antrim Primary School had a visit from two people called "Kids on the Block". They were
from Face inclusion matters and talked to the children about disability, through the use of
puppets. P1-P4 saw the first show, then P5 - P7 had their own show later in the day.
Some children with the puppets
at the end of the show.
